Mandala Chart Maker

A mandala chart is a 9x9 goal grid: one big goal in the middle, 8 themes around it, and 8 concrete actions for each theme. Fill it in block by block on your phone, then save it as an A4 PDF, a square image or a 9:16 story. Need paper? Print the blank template.

How the 81 squares fit together

WhereSquaresWhat goes there
Very center1Your main goal — the one thing you want this year (or season)
Around the center8Themes — the areas the goal depends on (fitness, skills, money…)
Middle of each outer block8The same themes, copied out (filled in for you)
Rest of the outer blocks64Actions — 8 concrete things to do for each theme

1 + 8 + 8 + 64 = 81. One goal turns into 8 themes and 64 actions, so "what do I do today?" always has an answer.

Tips for a chart you will actually use

  • Make the main goal specific and finite: "run a half marathon by October" works better than "get fit".
  • Keep the 8 themes from overlapping. Splitting by life area — body, mind, people, money — leaves fewer gaps.
  • Give every action a number: how often, how long or how much. "Walk 40 minutes, 3x a week" is something you can check off.
  • Save the story size as your phone wallpaper or print the A4 PDF for your desk, so you see it every day.

Want to schedule the actions month by month? Pair it with the free 2027 digital planner for GoodNotes.

How to use it

  1. Start with the center block: write your main goal in the middle and the 8 areas it depends on around it. An example is filled in so you can see the idea; tap "Clear all" to start fresh.
  2. Tap any outer block on the block map (or on the preview) to open it full size. Its theme is already in the middle, so just add 8 specific actions.
  3. Pick a theme and a size (square, story or A4), then tap "Save image" or "Download PDF". Prefer pen and paper? Grab the "Blank template PDF" and print it.

FAQ

What is a mandala chart?

It is a 9x9 grid of 81 squares for breaking a goal down. Your main goal goes in the very center, 8 supporting themes go around it, and each theme gets its own 3x3 block with 8 actions. One goal becomes 8 themes and 64 actions you can actually do. The format, called Mandal-Art, was created by Japanese designer Hiroaki Imaizumi in 1987.

Is this the same as Shohei Ohtani’s goal chart?

Same structure. As a high school freshman, Ohtani put "drafted first by 8 teams" in the center and filled the themes with body, control, pitch quality, mental, speed 160 km/h, character, luck and breaking balls. His chart is usually linked to the Harada Method, a goal-setting program by coach Takashi Harada. This tool gives you the same empty grid for your own goal; it does not copy his chart.

Can I really fill it in on a phone?

Yes. Spreadsheet and PDF templates squeeze all 81 squares onto one screen, so each square ends up tiny. Here you edit one 3x3 block at a time at full width and jump between blocks with the block map. When you are done, export the whole 81-square chart.

Where is my chart saved? Is it uploaded?

Nothing is uploaded. Your chart is saved only in this browser on this device, so you can close the tab and come back to it, but it will not show up on another device. Download a PDF or image to keep a copy. "Clear all" removes it from this device too.

Is there a blank printable mandala chart template?

Tap "Blank template PDF" to download a one-page A4 sheet with all 81 squares empty, in the theme color you picked, plus name and timeframe lines at the top and a one-line commitment at the bottom. Print at "Actual size (100%)" and each square is about 1.9 cm (0.75 in) wide — enough room for handwriting. It prints fine on US Letter with "Fit to page".

I can’t think of 64 actions. Is that okay?

Totally. Most people write the 8 themes first, add 3 or 4 actions to the blocks that come easily, and fill the rest over a few days. Make actions measurable — "walk 40 minutes, 3 times a week" beats "exercise more" — so you can tell whether you did them.

Why does the middle of each outer block fill itself in?

The center square of each outer block is that block’s theme, copied from the center block. Edit a theme in either place and both update, so you never type the same thing twice.

What sizes do the downloads come in?

Square is 1600x1600 px (Instagram feed), story is 1080x1920 px (9:16 for Instagram Stories or a phone wallpaper), and A4 is drawn at 200 dpi (1654x2339 px) and saved as a one-page PDF.
