Cake Topper Generator

Type your words, choose your cake size and download a printable cake topper at the exact size for that cake. A border joins every letter into one piece you can cut out in one go, with marks for the sticks and a matching back piece. For a 6-inch cake, a topper about 4.7 in wide looks right.

The topper width is 80% of the cake diameter, rounded to 5 mm, and capped at what fits across one sheet of Letter paper. Its height depends on your words: "Happy Birthday" with a name underneath on a 6-inch cake comes out about 4.7 × 1.7 in in the Script font. Once the sticks are in, about 1.5 in of stick shows between the topper and the cake.

How to make a paper cake topper

  1. Download the PDF and print it on cardstock with the scale set to "Actual size". Measure the 2-inch ruler at the bottom to be sure.
  2. Cut the front and back pieces along the grey line. You never cut inside the letters; the border keeps it all one piece.
  3. Tape or hot-glue bamboo skewers, lollipop sticks or paper straws behind the ▲ marks on the front piece.
  4. Glue the back piece over the sticks, then push the topper into the back half of the cake. Clear tape on the bottom edge keeps frosting off the paper.

Frequently asked questions

Is this cake topper generator really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. Your text never leaves your browser; the topper is drawn on your device. The fonts (Jua, Pacifico, Gaegu, Black Han Sans) are under the SIL Open Font License, so you can use the toppers on cakes you sell.

What size should a cake topper be?

About 80% of the cake's diameter, so a little frosting shows on each side. The defaults here are 3.1 in for a 4-inch cake, 4.7 in for 6-inch, 6.3 in for 8-inch and the widest that fits the paper for 10-inch. The preview also shows the sticks standing about 1.5 in above the cake.

My printed topper came out the wrong size. How do I print it?

In the print dialog choose "Actual size" or 100% scale, not "Fit to page". There is a 2-inch ruler at the bottom of every PDF page, so you can check the result with a ruler before you cut. Printing from a computer is usually more accurate than from a phone.

What paper works best for a printable cake topper?

65–110 lb cardstock stays stiff once the sticks are on. For glitter cardstock, pick the "Outline" color option, print it on plain paper, hold it on top of the glitter sheet and cut both together. Wrapping the bottom edge in clear tape keeps it clean if it touches frosting.

How do I attach the sticks?

The ▲ marks under the cut line show where the sticks go: they sit under the bottom line of text, usually two, or one in the middle when the topper is under 3.5 in wide or its bottom line is very short. Keep "Include a back piece" on and you get a mirrored back piece. Tape or hot-glue bamboo skewers, lollipop sticks or paper straws behind the front piece, then glue the back piece over them so the topper looks finished from behind too.

Can I cut it with a Cricut or Silhouette?

Yes. "SVG for Cricut" downloads an SVG at real size in millimeters. The base shape (topper-base) and the letters (topper-letters) are separate groups, so you can cut them from two colors of cardstock and layer them. The transparent PNG has 300 dpi worth of pixels for Print Then Cut or print shops; set its width to the topper width after you upload it.

Will the letters fall apart when I cut them out?

No. A border wraps every letter and joins them into one shape, any word that still sits apart gets a bridge at least 3 mm thick, and gaps too narrow for scissors (under 4 mm) are filled in. Cut along the outer grey line and the whole topper comes out in one piece. Choose a thick border if you are cutting by hand.

Can I write something other than Happy Birthday?

Anything up to 16 characters per line and three lines: a name, "Happy 30th", "Oh Baby", "Congrats Grad", "Mr & Mrs" or "Cheers to 40 Years". The Script font joins the letters like handwriting, which is the classic look for birthday and wedding toppers.
