Five Elements Calculator: What Element Am I?

Enter your birth date and birth hour, and this counts the eight characters of your BaZi chart (year, month, day and hour pillars) by element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The year and month switch at the exact solar terms (the year starts at Lichun, around February 4), not on January 1. If you do not know your birth hour, it counts six characters. Save the result as a 9:16 card with a little character for every element you have, and add a friend to see whether the two of you hold all five. Free, no name or email, and your birthday never leaves your browser.

How the eight characters map to elements

ElementHeavenly StemsEarthly Branches
Wood甲 乙寅 卯
Fire丙 丁巳 午
Earth戊 己丑 辰 未 戌
Metal庚 辛申 酉
Water壬 癸子 亥

For example, someone born on October 24, 2000 in the Snake hour has the pillars 庚辰 (year), 丙戌 (month), 乙卯 (day) and 辛巳 (hour). Counting the eight characters gives Wood 2, Fire 2, Earth 2, Metal 2 and Water 0, so they are missing Water. The year changes at Lichun and each month at one of the twelve "jie" solar terms.

How it is calculated

  • Solar terms: apparent solar longitude from Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, chapter 25 (about 15 minutes accuracy), checked against Lichun 2024 and 2025.
  • Day pillar: the 60-day cycle from the Julian day number, cross-checked against the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute calendar for 1950–2049.
  • Time: your device time zone for the date you enter. Hidden stems are not counted.

How it works

  1. 1

Pick your birth year, month and day (Gregorian calendar).

  2. 2

Pick your two-hour birth window, such as Ox 1:00am–2:59am (between 11pm and midnight, choose "Rat (late)"). If you do not know it, leave it on "Not sure" and the hour pillar is skipped.

  3. 3

Right below, you get your eight characters, a count of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, what your strongest and missing elements say about you, and one line of permission for today.

  4. 4

Save the 9:16 card for your story, or send the link. When a friend opens it and enters their birthday, they see both of you combined.

FAQ

How do I find my element in Chinese astrology?

Your BaZi chart writes the year, month, day and hour of birth as two characters each: a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Water. Count all eight and you get something like Fire 3, Wood 2, Earth 2, Metal 1, Water 0. Many people call the stem of the day pillar their "Day Master" element; this tool shows it as the top character of the day column.

What does a missing water element in BaZi mean?

It just means none of your eight characters is Water. That is common: most charts are missing at least one element. Traditional readers look at balance and timing, not a single zero, so a missing element is not a bad sign on its own. The traits shown here are for fun and reflection, not advice about health, money or big decisions, and we do not recommend buying bracelets or charms to "fix" an element.

What if I do not know my birth time?

Choose "Not sure" and the hour pillar (two characters) is left out, so six characters are counted. If you find out your time later, try again: those two extra characters can add an element you seemed to be missing. Born between 11pm and midnight? Pick "Rat (late)": many schools count that hour as the next day, and the tool moves the day pillar for you.

Why is my zodiac year different from my birth year?

In BaZi the year begins at Lichun, the Start of Spring solar term around February 3 to 5, not on January 1 or Lunar New Year. If you were born in January or early February before Lichun, your year pillar is the previous year. Months work the same way and change at solar terms. This tool calculates the sun position for the exact term (accurate to about 15 minutes) and warns you when you were born on a day the term changes.

Which time zone does it use?

It uses your device time zone for the date you enter, which also applies historical daylight saving rules. If you were born somewhere else, the year and month pillars only change when your birthday is a solar term day, and the tool tells you when that happens. The hour pillar comes from the two-hour window you pick, so pick it by the local clock where you were born.

How does "add a friend" work?

It adds your five counts to a friend’s and shows whether the two of you cover all five elements, for example "I have no Water, but you bring 3". Enter their birthday directly, or send your link: the link carries only your five counts, not your birthday, so your friend just enters their own date.

Why might other BaZi calculators show something different?

Small differences come from a few choices: whether hidden stems inside each branch are counted, whether a birth after 11pm counts as the next day, how two-hour windows are aligned, and whether local solar time is used instead of clock time. This tool counts the eight visible characters, treats "Rat (late)" as the next day, and uses your clock time.

Do you store my birthday?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. There is no sign-up, name or email. The card and share link only contain your characters and element counts.
