Mini Book Keychain Template

Type a book title and author, pick a cover pattern, and this makes a true-size template for a tiny book: front cover, spine and back cover printed as one wrap, plus the inner pages. Sizes are S 25×35 mm (about 1×1.4 in), M 35×50 mm (1.4×2 in) and L 50×70 mm (2×2.75 in). The spine is your page count × 0.1 mm plus 1 mm for the cover to wrap, rounded up to the next 0.5 mm, so 20 pages gives a 3 mm spine. Print the PDF at 100% on Letter or A4.

The open cover is back cover + spine + front cover in one strip, so it is twice the cover width plus the spine. With 12 pages the spine is 12 × 0.1 mm + 1 mm = 2.2 mm, rounded up to 2.5 mm. Pages are cut 1.5 mm narrower and 2 mm shorter than the cover so the cover overhangs a little, the way a hardback does.

What you need

  • Scissors or a craft knife, a metal ruler and a cutting mat
  • PVA (white) glue and a binder clip, or double-sided tape
  • An awl or thick needle, a small jump ring (5 to 6 mm) and a key ring or lobster clasp
  • Clear packing tape or a laminating sheet, if you want it to last

How to make a mini book keychain

  1. Print at actual size (100%) and check the 2 inch ruler at the bottom of the sheet.
  2. Cut out the cover strip on the solid line. Score and fold at the two tick marks under it so the spine stands up.
  3. Cut the pages apart on the lines, stack them in order (patterned endpaper on top, then the title page) and glue the spine edge. Clip and let it dry.
  4. Glue the cover around the page block: front endpaper inside the front cover, spine to spine, back endpaper inside the back cover.
  5. Once dry, poke a hole at the + mark (top corner by the spine) through the whole book, then add the jump ring and key ring.

How to use it

  1. 1

Type the title and author and pick one of eight cover patterns. A favorite quote (printed on the back cover and page two) and a cover sticker are under "More options".

  2. 2

Choose a size (S, M or L) and how many pages. The spine width updates on its own (12 pages and a 2.5 mm spine to start). Add up to six books with "+ Add a book".

  3. 3

Download the PDF and print at actual size (100%). Cut on the solid lines, fold the cover at the two tick marks under it, stack the pages and glue them along the spine edge.

FAQ

What size should a mini book keychain be?

M (35×50 mm, about 1.4×2 in) is the easy pick for a bag or key charm. S (25×35 mm) is the tiny fingernail size, and L (50×70 mm) leaves room to write inside. The front and back covers are exactly that size, and the pages are 1.5 mm narrower and 2 mm shorter so they sit inside the cover like a real hardback.

How is the spine width worked out?

One sheet of standard copy paper (20 to 24 lb, 75 to 90 gsm) is about 0.1 mm thick. The spine is page count × 0.1 mm plus 1 mm for the cover to wrap around, rounded up to the next 0.5 mm: 6 pages gives 2 mm, 20 pages 3 mm, 40 pages 5 mm and 60 pages 7 mm. If you print the pages on heavier paper, add a few pages so the spine comes out wider.

How do I print it at the right size?

In the print dialog choose "Actual size" or 100% scale, not "Fit to page". Measure the 2 inch ruler at the bottom of the sheet; if it measures 2 inches, everything is true size. On a phone, save the PDF to Files and print from there or move it to a computer.

How do I put the mini book together?

Stack the pages in order (the patterned endpapers go first and last), brush a thin line of PVA glue along the spine edge and hold them with a binder clip while it dries. Fold the cover at the two tick marks so the spine stands up, glue the front endpaper inside the front cover, the back endpaper inside the back cover and the spines together, so the title page is the first thing you see when it opens. Once dry, poke a hole with an awl at the + mark on the front cover (top corner by the spine) straight through to the back cover and add a small jump ring for the key ring.

How can I make it sturdier?

Cover the printed wrap with clear packing tape or a laminating sheet before you cut it out, so it stands up to rain and handling. For a hardback feel, glue thin card (cereal box weight) behind the front and back panels, and add four to six pages so the spine is wide enough for the extra thickness. A dab of glue around the hole, left to dry, keeps the jump ring from tearing the paper.

Can I use it for a school book report?

Yes. Pick L and plenty of pages and you get a title page, a page with your favorite quote and lined pages to write a summary or review by hand. The second-to-last page has a "Finished on" line, and the first and last sheets are patterned endpapers that get glued to the cover. Pages are printed on one side only, so the backs are blank.

How many books fit on one sheet?

With 12 printed pages each, one sheet holds three S books or one M book (two with 8 pages), and an L book takes two sheets. Switch pages to "Covers only" under "More options" and one sheet holds 18 S covers, 8 M covers or 3 L covers; cut the pages from any plain paper using the sizes in the table. Add more books and the PDF simply gets more sheets.

Is it free, and is anything I type uploaded?

It is free and needs no account. Titles and quotes are drawn into the template inside your browser and never sent to a server. The covers use your title lettering and our own patterns only; they do not copy any publisher cover or logo.
