Subpixel Text Generator

Good to know

Make pixel text with orange and blue fringes on the letter edges, the effect behind the Coral Pixels look. Type a line, pick how worn it should be, and save a PNG.

Why text gets colored fringes

CaptureWhat happens
Yesterday24 cells per character. Crisp, with color only at the edges.
200916 cells. Orange and blue run along every stroke.
200312 cells. Strokes start to touch.
199810 cells. Dense characters smear together.

Cyber weathering is a name for how images wear down as they are copied and shared again and again. This look spread online as a Latin color font, but there was no easy generator that handled other scripts, so we built one.

How to use

  1. 1

Type your line in the box under the screen.

  2. 2

Pick a capture year, or tap Weather it to age the text one step at a time. Older years break the letters up more.

  3. 3

Hit Save to get a PNG. Use Save transparent when you want to lay the text over a photo.

FAQ

Do I install a font file?

No. This tool draws your line into an image on the spot, so there is no font file to install. Save the PNG and use it anywhere.

Is this the same as the Coral Pixels font?

The visual idea is the same. Coral Pixels is a color font built from subpixel rendering for Latin text. This tool draws ordinary text small and adds the same color fringes, so it works with any script the typeface covers.

Why do orange and blue appear on the letter edges?

An LCD pixel is split into red, green and blue stripes. Drawing letter edges at that stripe scale looks sharper on screen but leaves color behind when you zoom in. This tool pushes that color toward orange and blue on purpose.

My text is too blurry to read.

The 1998 step gives each character only 10 cells, so dense letters smear together on purpose. Switch to 2009 or Yesterday, or pick Gothic for a clearer result.

What is the transparent PNG for?

Use it to lay text over a photo or video. Save from the light screen for bright photos and from the dark screen for dark ones.

Can I use the images commercially?

The typefaces are Noto Serif KR, Gothic A1 and Black Han Sans, all under the SIL Open Font License, so you can use the images in thumbnails, posters and other work.

Nothing happens when I tap Save.

Browsers built into apps like Instagram or Facebook can block downloads. Copy the address and open it in Chrome or Safari.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Your text is drawn inside your browser and is never sent to a server.
