Taiyaki Maker: Bake Your Drawing

Draw inside a fish-shaped mold with your finger or mouse, choose a filling, flip the mold as it bakes and pull it out at the right moment. It takes a minute or two. Lines you draw first sit on the hot iron longer, so they bake darker, just like pancake art, and your drawing comes out on three fish pastries in a paper bag. Hit perfectly golden for 100 points, then save a 1080×1350 post or 1080×1920 wallpaper, or send a link so a friend sees exactly what you baked. Free, no sign-up, nothing to install.

The five bake levels

LevelDonenessYour drawing
Raw batter0 – 0.6barely there
Pale0.6 – 0.85faint
Golden0.85 – 1.15crisp and clear
A bit dark1.15 – 1.45extra bold
Burnt1.45 – 2lost in smoke

Doneness runs from 0 (raw batter) to 2 (charcoal). The side facing the fire reaches 1, the middle of golden, in about 4.5 seconds, and the other side cooks at a quarter of that speed. Your bake score is highest when the drawing side sits right at 1, with a small penalty if the back is very underdone or burnt.

How the drawing gets baked in

Batter keeps cooking for as long as it touches the hot mold. Lines you draw first get one shade darker every 2 seconds (up to 7 shades), and the batter poured last becomes the background. You can even watch your first lines start to brown while you draw. It is the same trick pancake artists use when they pour the outline first.

A little taiyaki history

Taiyaki, the sea bream-shaped cake, is said to have been first baked in 1909 at Naniwaya, a shop in Tokyo. It reached Korea in the 1930s, where it became bungeoppang, shaped like a crucian carp, and it is now the classic winter street snack there. More in Wikipedia's Taiyaki and Bungeo-ppang articles.

How to play

  1. 1

Draw inside the dark fish-shaped mold. Lines outside the mold disappear. Lines you draw first bake darker, so start with the outline or eyes you want to stand out.

  2. 2

Tap "Done drawing" and pick a filling: red bean, custard, sweet potato or pizza. "Pour batter & close" covers your drawing with batter.

  3. 3

Watch the gauges and tap "Flip" to switch which side faces the fire. Pull it out when both the drawing side and the back sit in the golden zone.

  4. 4

Out come three pastries with your drawing and a one-line review. Add a shop name, save the card or send the link, then "Bake again".

FAQ

Why do the lines I draw first come out darker?

Batter cooks for as long as it touches the hot mold. The lines you draw first sit there longer than the batter poured later, so they brown more (one step every 2 seconds, up to 7 steps). Pancake artists use the same trick: outline first, fill later.

How do I get a perfectly golden taiyaki?

The side facing the fire turns golden in about 4.5 seconds, and the other side cooks at a quarter of that speed. So flip just before the drawing side reaches the golden zone, then pull it out when the back gets there too. Never flip and the belly stays raw, so it counts as pale. The three molds run slightly hotter or cooler (about 6%), like a real street grill, so pulling at the edge of the zone can leave one pastry a bit dark.

What is taiyaki, and what is bungeoppang?

Taiyaki is a Japanese fish-shaped cake, usually filled with sweet red bean paste. It is said to have started in 1909 at Naniwaya, a shop in Tokyo, and the shape is a sea bream (tai), a fish of good luck. Korea's version, bungeoppang, arrived in the 1930s and took the shape of a crucian carp instead. It is now the classic Korean winter street snack (per Wikipedia's Taiyaki and Bungeo-ppang articles).

Is this like the pancake art games?

Same idea, different pan. In pancake art you pour batter lines on a griddle and the early lines brown first. Here you draw in a taiyaki mold, close it, flip it like a street vendor would, and the drawing comes out baked onto the pastry.

Which fillings can I choose? Do they change the score?

Red bean, custard, sweet potato and pizza. The filling does not change your score. It shows up on the result card and in the one-line review. Red bean is the classic; custard is the most common second choice at stalls.

Can I bake without drawing anything?

Yes. A plain one comes out as "the classic". If you color in the whole mold, almost all of it turns dark brown. While drawing, "Undo" removes the last stroke and "Clear" starts over.

What size are the saved images?

Post is 1080×1350 (4:5) and wallpaper is 1080×1920 (9:16). The wallpaper leaves the top clear so your lock screen clock does not cover the pastry. Images are made on your device and never uploaded.

What goes into the share link? Is anything saved?

The link itself carries a compressed copy of your drawing (up to 420 points), how well it was baked, the filling and the shop name. Nothing is stored on a server, so only people with the link can see it. This device only remembers how many taiyaki you have baked.
