My Picture Diary: Draw and Write Journal Maker
Pick a date and the weather, add a title and write about your day. The words land on primary handwriting lines (solid top line, dashed middle line, baseline) under a big picture box, just like a kindergarten or first-grade draw and write journal. Draw in the box with crayon, colored pencil or marker using your finger, or drop in a photo and it turns into a crayon drawing. Then the teacher writes a short red-pen note that matches what you wrote (friends, rain, the park, a birthday, a hard day at work…) and stamps it "Great job!". Save it as a 4:5 feed image or a 9:16 story image, or print blank journal pages for kids as an A4 PDF that also fits US Letter. Past dates work too, so you can rewrite a day from childhood. Nothing you write or draw is uploaded.
Good to know
Sample teacher notes
If your entry mentions one of these words, the teacher’s note starts like this. A second line that matches the feeling you picked follows.
| Word in the entry | Teacher’s note |
|---|---|
| friend | I am so glad you have good friends. |
| rain | I love rainy day stories. Did you jump in puddles? |
| playground | Looks like a super fun day at the park! |
| in trouble | That sounds like a hard day. Thank you for writing it down honestly. |
| sick | Sounds like a not-so-well day. Rest up. |
| birthday | Happy birthday wishes from me too! |
| test | I can tell you worked hard. Effort beats any score! |
| work | You went to work again today. Being a grown-up is hard! |
Which line count to print
| Lines | Line height | About | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 lines | 21 mm | about 15 words | Pre-K and early kindergarten |
| 6 lines | 17 mm | about 25 words | Kindergarten |
| 7 lines | 14 mm | about 35 words | First grade |
| 9 lines | 11 mm | about 55 words | Second grade and up, or adults |
Line height is measured on the printed A4 page. Fewer lines means taller lines and bigger letters.

How it works
- 1
Pick the date (any day, past or present; the weekday fills in) and tap a weather picture to circle it.
- 2
Add a title and write about your day. The number of lines adjusts to your text, or pick 5, 6, 7 or 9 lines yourself.
- 3
Tap "Draw here" and draw in the picture box with your finger or mouse, or tap "Add a photo" to turn a photo into crayon art. Clear the sample drawing with "Clear drawing" (Undo brings it back).
- 4
Pick how you felt and the teacher’s red-pen note changes to match. Tap "Another note" for a new one or edit it, and choose a stamp.
- 5
Save a 4:5 feed image or a 9:16 story image. For blank pages, choose the number of lines under "Blank journal page" and download the PDF.
FAQ
Is the draw and write journal printable really free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no watermark. Under "Blank journal page", choose 5, 6, 7 or 9 handwriting lines and you get a portrait PDF with a date line, weather pictures to circle, a title line, a big drawing box and the writing lines. Print as many copies as you like and staple them into a journal.
How many lines should a kindergarten or first-grade journal page have?
Beginning writers in pre-K and kindergarten do best with 5 tall lines, where each line is big enough for large letters. Late kindergarten and first grade usually move to 6 or 7 lines, and 9 lines suits second grade and up or kids who write long entries. If your teacher gives a format, follow it.
What are the dashed middle lines for?
They are primary handwriting lines. Tall letters (b, d, h, capitals) reach the solid top line, small letters (a, c, e) reach the dashed middle line, and everything sits on the solid baseline. It helps young kids size their letters while they journal.
What should my child write in a draw and write journal?
One moment from the day is enough: who was there, where, what happened, and how it felt. Prompts like "Today I…", "My favorite part was…" and "I felt … because…" help. Draw the one scene you wrote about, nice and big. For adults, the same simple format makes a surprisingly calming one-page diary.
How does the teacher’s note work?
The tool looks for words in your entry (friend, mom, grandma, rain, snow, park, birthday, test, sick, work and about 20 topics in all) and picks a matching line, then adds a line for the feeling you chose. Every note was written by us, not generated by AI. Tap "Another note" for a different one, or tap the note to write your own.
Can adults use it?
Absolutely. Write about your workday in a first-grade journal and see what the teacher says ("You went to work again today. Being a grown-up is hard!"). Set the date to a day from your childhood and the weekday updates. The 4:5 feed and 9:16 story images are sized for Instagram, Threads and X.
Will the PDF print on US Letter paper?
The PDF is A4 portrait at 200dpi with a wide margin. On US Letter, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog and the whole page prints with a slightly bigger white border.
Is my diary saved anywhere?
No. Your words, drawing and photo stay in your browser and are never uploaded. Refreshing the page clears them, so save your image before you leave.
