Korean School Lunch Tray Maker

Korean students eat lunch off a stainless steel tray with five compartments: rice at the bottom left, soup at the bottom right and three side dishes along the top, with a carton of milk and a dessert on the side. Name your school, pick a date, then tap each compartment and fill it from 47 hand-drawn foods such as curry rice, jjajang rice, bulgogi, sweet and sour pork, tteokbokki, rolled omelet, kimchi, chocolate milk and a yogurt drink. You get a lunch menu card with the English and Korean name of each dish, its common allergens (from the US Big 9) and a check against the five MyPlate food groups. Save it as a square or story image, or print a free A4 worksheet with an empty tray and food cut-outs for class. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

How to build a lunch tray

  1. 1

Type a school name (a made-up one is fine) and pick a date. The weekday updates on its own.

  2. 2

Tap a compartment on the tray (rice, soup, side 1 to 3, milk or dessert), then tap a food below to drop it in. The next empty compartment is selected for you.

  3. 3

Tap "Surprise me" for a random tray. Tap a filled compartment and "Empty this one" to take a dish out.

  4. 4

Check the menu card for allergens and the food group check, and tap "Another line" to change the closing line.

  5. 5

Save a square or story image. Teachers can grab the printable worksheet under "Classroom worksheet (A4)".

FAQ

What does a Korean school lunch look like?

Most Korean schools serve a hot lunch on a divided stainless steel tray. A typical tray has steamed rice or a rice dish, a soup or stew, kimchi and two more side dishes (a meat or fish dish and a vegetable), plus milk and sometimes fruit, a yogurt drink or a small dessert. Curry rice, jjajang rice, tteokbokki and sweet crispy chicken days are the ones students remember.

How do I make my own Korean school lunch tray?

Tap a compartment, then tap a food to drop it in. Rice dishes only go in the rice well, soups in the round well, and any of the 22 side dishes in the three top wells. Milk and dessert sit beside the tray. Tap "Surprise me" if you want a random lunch to start from.

How are the allergen tags chosen?

Each dish lists the US Big 9 allergens (milk, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy, sesame) that a common school recipe would contain. Soy sauce adds soy and wheat, kimchi usually has fish sauce and salted shrimp, and breaded cutlets have egg, milk and wheat. These are examples for learning, not a safety label. Always check the real menu if someone has a food allergy.

What does the food group check mean?

Every dish is tagged with the MyPlate food groups it adds: grains, protein, vegetables, fruits and dairy. The card tells you which of the five groups your tray is missing, for example "This tray has no fruit". It does not count portions or calories and it is not a health score.

Can I use it in class?

Yes, it is free with no sign-up. The worksheet PDF has a full-size empty lunch tray with name and date lines, spots for milk and dessert, and a food group checklist on page 1, and food cut-outs (rice and soup, side dishes, milk and dessert) on pages 2 to 4. Choose line art for coloring or full color. It is A4, so on US Letter paper print with "Fit to page".

What size are the saved images?

The square image is 1080×1080 and the story image is 1080×1920 PNG. Both show the school name and date, your tray, the menu with allergens, the food group dots and a closing line. On a phone, "Share" sends the story image straight to Instagram, Messages and other apps.

Where do the food drawings come from?

Wimo Universe made all 47 food drawings for this tool. Your saved tray images and the worksheet are free to use in class, at home or on social media. Please do not resell the drawings on their own.

Is my school name stored anywhere?

No. The school name, date and menu stay in this browser tab and are never uploaded. Refreshing the page resets the tray, so save the image when you like it.
